What Is Memory Care Assisted Living?

What Is Memory Care Assisted Living?

July 20, 2023

When it comes to determining the right level of care for you or your loved one, there is rarely an easy way to do it. The decision itself is often fraught with feelings and can be complicated by the unique circumstances every family brings to the table when considering questions of this nature. However, knowledge is power, as they say, and LivWell Seniors is happy to help with a high-level introduction to the basics that will leave you feeling prepared to take whatever step is next in the journey ahead.

When specific programming that focuses on the experience of memory conditions like Alzheimer’s is required, memory care assisted living may be the best choice for you or your loved one.

What?

Memory care assisted living is a secure environment designed to care for people with memory conditions such as Alzheimer’s, dementia (including vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal lobe dementia), Parkinson’s-related dementia, and others. This is a locked community that prevents the elopement that is common with people who are experiencing memory decline, while also offering an opportunity to experience some of the privacy and comforts of home. Both private suites and studio apartments are available, creating a smaller environment that is better suited for people with this disease progression. Those residing in this setting are encouraged to bring their own furniture and decor from home.

Memory specific programming is available with scheduled frequencies throughout the day, creating an engaging environment that is helpful both physically and cognitively, specifically helping to offset Sundowning – a common condition that produces confusion and agitation during the late afternoon and early evening hours.

Who?

Anyone with a condition that results in a memory decline.

Consider This Scenario

Marie is a 74-year-old widow with a recent diagnosis of dementia. Her oldest daughter offered to move her into her home and care for her, but after several months of this arrangement, her daughter is finding it difficult to keep Marie safe. On three separate occasions, she has left her daughter’s house on foot in the middle of the night because she wanted to “go home.” After the third time, Marie’s daughter and her siblings decided to find a safer environment for Marie, and they settled on memory care assisted living to meet all of Marie’s needs.

Memory care assisted living communities provide assistance with all activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and meals, with memory specific trained staff to redirect someone like Marie who has exit seeking behavior.

Cost

Memory care assisted living starts at $5,500 per month and may go as high as $8,000 per month, inclusive of care.
