Caregiving 101: What Families Need to Know About Caring for Aging Parents

June 16, 2026

Caring for an aging loved one is something many families eventually face, but few feel fully prepared when the time comes. Between balancing careers, raising children, and managing daily life, caregiving can quickly become overwhelming emotionally, financially, and physically.

At LivWell Seniors and LivWell CARES, helping families navigate these challenges is at the heart of what we do. Erica Schroeder-Cerda, Partner Relations Director for LivWell Seniors, recently shared insights into the realities of caregiving and how families can better prepare for the future.

The Growing Need for Caregiving Support

America’s senior population is growing rapidly. Every day, approximately 10,000 Americans turn 65, and by 2050, the senior population is expected to reach 88 million people nationwide.

While advances in medicine are helping people live longer, many seniors still require additional support as they age. As a result, millions of families are stepping into caregiving roles — often unexpectedly.

Today, more than 53 million Americans serve as unpaid family caregivers, the vast majority of them are women. Many are also part of the “sandwich generation,” supporting both aging parents and their own children at the same time.

Caregiving impacts nearly every area of life. It can affect work schedules, finances, emotional health, and family relationships. Many caregivers are also trying to manage full-time jobs while also caring for loved ones, often leading to stress and burnout.

When Caregiving Becomes a Crisis

One of the biggest challenges families face is that caregiving often begins during a crisis.

A fall, hospitalization, stroke, or dementia diagnosis can force families to make major decisions quickly. Adult children may suddenly need to take time off work, travel long distances, or determine whether a loved one can safely continue living at home.

If your family isn’t prepared, you might find yourself scrambling to coordinate care, housing, finances, and medical decisions all while in the middle of a health crisis.

Unfortunately, that’s the situation many families find themselves in because many seniors avoid conversations about aging because they fear losing independence or are overwhelmed by the thought of needing help.

Signs It May Be Time for Help

Families often ask, “How do we know when it’s time to start looking at care options?”

There are several signs additional support may be needed, including:

  • Difficulty managing medications
  • Missed appointments
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Trouble bathing or dressing
  • Increased forgetfulness
  • Unsafe driving concerns
  • Frequent falls or mobility issues

Sometimes adult children are already providing significant support without realizing how much responsibility they’ve taken on. Coordinating meals, medications, transportation, errands, and appointments can essentially turn family members into assisted living providers.

Understanding Senior Care Options

Navigating senior care can feel confusing because there are so many different levels of care available. LivWell Seniors helps families determine which options best fit their loved one’s unique needs.

In-Home Care

Home care services can assist with medication reminders, meal preparation, bathing, companionship, and errands.

Independent Living

Independent living communities offer maintenance-free apartments and social opportunities for seniors who are still largely independent.

Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide additional support with daily tasks, medication management, and around-the-clock staff availability.

Memory Care

Memory care communities are designed specifically for individuals living with dementia or cognitive decline and provide specialized support in secure environments.

Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation

These facilities provide higher levels of medical care and rehabilitation services following hospitalization or serious illness.

The Financial Reality of Senior Care

One of the most common misconceptions about senior care is assuming Medicare covers long-term care needs.

Medicare generally only covers short-term rehabilitation following a hospitalization — not long-term assisted living or nursing care.

Families often rely on private savings, home sales, long-term care insurance. Medicaid programs, or VA benefits to help cover care costs, but there a specific requirements to qualify. Because every family’s financial situation is different, planning ahead becomes critical.

Preparing Important Documents

Another essential part of caregiving preparation is making sure legal and financial documents are in place before they’re needed.

Important documents include:

  • Living wills
  • Powers of attorney
  • Financial directives
  • Last wills and testaments
  • Password and digital account information

Having these conversations early can reduce stress and confusion during emergencies and ensure a loved one’s wishes are honored.
